Congress for SSP amicable solution

By Our Correspondent
Gandhinagar, June 1

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary said on Thursday that the Congress will support the Prime Minister in whatever decision he takes to resolve the Sardar Sarovar Project deadlock.

Criticising the state government for unduly politicising the issue and “maligning” Congress, Mr Chaudhary said that AICC president Sonia Gandhi has directed the Congress MPs from the concerned states to endorse Mr Vajpayee’s decision adding that the Congress is committed to the cause of Narmada.

Meanwhile, the BJP general secretary Gordhan Jhadaphia said on Thursday that Sonia Gandhi made the visit too late. “She should have come early to enthuse Congress workers to participate in the relief works. All she did by coming here was to criticise relief works,” he said. The BJP workers have been working hard in drought-affected areas and would have appreciated constructive suggestions from her to improve the relief operations, the BJP leader said.

The Congress will launch a statewide rally against the ruling state government to oppose “misconduct of the drought relief measures,” said GPCC president C.D. Patel. He said a meeting of Congress MPs, MLAs and heads of frontal organisations with AICC secretary Pawan Kumar Bansal has chalked out a plan to protest against gross mishandling of the relief work.

Commenting on Sonia Gandhi visit, Mr Patel said the AICC president personally met hundreds of relief workers to have first hand account of problems they faced. The injustice meted out to them will be highlighted in the protest rally, he added. He further said the AICC has also planned nationwide rallies on the issue of pricerise.
