Ban orders around Narmada dam site

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR, DEC. 1. The Gujarat Government has imposed prohibitory orders banning assembly of more than four persons in and around the Narmada main dam site at Kevadiya Colony in view of the proposed ``Kar Seva'' by the Maharashtra Shetkari Sangathan on December 4.

Announcing this here today, the Chief Minister, Mr. Keshubhai Patel, and the Narmada Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaynarayan Vyas, said though the Sangathan had not yet intimated its detailed programme of agitation, the State Government would not allow the kar sevaks to converge at the dam site and all steps would be taken to maintain law and order.

The lives of the kar sevaks might be endangered if they attempted to climb the main dam wall tilting at 70 degrees to pick up water in buckets and pour in the main canal as per the revised plan of kar seva. The imposition of the prohibitory orders and to prevent the entry of the kar sevaks in the restricted areas and the decision of the Sangathan, supported by some voluntary organisations and some leaders of the State Congress(I), to go ahead with the kar seva plan give an indication of possible confrontation between the two groups of the pro-dam forces.
