Keshubhai furthering NBA cause: Joshi

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD, DEC. 2. The Maharashtra Shetkari Sangathan has rejected the Gujarat Government's appeal to either postpone or change the mode of demonstration in favour of the Narmada dam project on Saturday and has decided to go ahead with its scheduled ``Kar Seva'' programme at the dam site in Kevadiya Colony.

Talking to media persons here today, Mr. Joshi said the kar sevaks would violate the prohibitory orders imposed by the State Government to pick up water from the main dam in buckets as a symbolic gesture to press for an early implementation of the project. ``Let the Gujarat police arrest the kar sevaks and demonstrate before the world that the State Government is not for early implementation of the project,'' he said. Accusing the State Government, and particularly the Chief Minister, Mr. Keshubhai Patel, of ``furthering the cause of the anti-dam Narmada Bachao Andolan,'' Mr. Joshi said the State Government's stand that the kar seva could prejudice the case in the Supreme Court was fallacious.

Pointing out the postponement of the further hearing before the Apex Court till February 8, he said it was because the Government pleader was not prepared with his brief. It was ``another proof'' of the State Government's tardy attitude towards the all- important dam project, he said.

Mr. Keshubhai Patel, he said, ``clandestinely supports the NBA leader, Ms. Medha Patkar and wants to prevent the Narmada dam from becoming a reality.``
