Narmada Project delay blamed for water scarcity

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAY 11. The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned that ``water riots'' would break out in Gujarat if the situation was not retrieved by the expeditious completion of the Narmada Project. The Madhya Pradesh government and NGOs were blamed for the delay in executing the project.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the GCCI president, Mr. Mukesh Patel, and the Minister for the Narmada Project, Mr. Jaynarayan Vyas, said the only long-term solution to drought in Gujarat was the Narmada Project. It was ironic that millions of cusecs of water were flowing into the sea while people were desperate for water, Mr. Vyas said.

What raised eyebrows was the fact that the press conference was called though the matter is sub judice and the Supreme Court had directed all parties concerned not to air their views publicly.
