Proper drainage system needed, says Thakur
HT Correspondent (New Delhi, February 1)

INDIAíS FERTILE lands may become barren soon if proper water drainage measures are delayed, warned Union Water Resources Minister C.P. Thakur at an international workshop on drainage and irrigation, which began here yesterday.

Waterlogging and salinity were the main reasons behind land degradation, Mr Thakur pointed out, while stressing the urgent need to develop adequate drainage infrastructure in the country.

If the country had to increase its foodgrain production to feed the growing population, it was necessary to adopt a holistic approach towards water usage, integrating drainage, flood control and water management in irrigation, the Minister emphasised.

The five-day workshop is being attended by experts from 17 countries.
