NBA march to stop work on Maheshwar
Bhopal, January 6 (PTI)

The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) today announced that it would embark on a non-violent, direct action plan from January 11 to stop work on the Maheshwar power project in Madhya Pradesh.

Announcing the decision, Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Chittaroopa Palit said at a Press conference that thousands of men, women and children along with supporters from all over the country would march to the project site on that day to stop work.

Palit claimed that electricity to be produced under the project would be so expensive that it would have to be sold at the rate of Rs 8 to Rs 10 per unit -- something which the farmers, common people, artisans and small and middle class industries could ill-afford.

She said the agitators, accompanied by the Booker Award winner, Ms Arundhati Roy, would not carry any arms or equipment. NBA was opposed to the project as it would lead to darkness for the people, fall in agricultural production and rise in external debt, she claimed.
