Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA)
activist Medha Patkar today filed a criminal defamation case
against the Indian Express in a city court for having carried
an advertisement allegedly defamatory to her and the Narmada
Patkar in her complaint named V K Saxena , president of
National Council for Civil Liberties, which had given the
advertisement, the Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar
Gupta and its publisher G R Saxena as accused.
Metropolitan magistrate R S Nag, before whom the
complaint was filed through counsel Ashok Arora and Prashant
Bhushan, fixed January 11 for recording statement of Patkar.
The complaint also mentioned that the Indian Express had
carried a clarification later saying the publication was
merely an advertisement and the "paper does not subscribe to
contents of the veiws expressed therein".
