The recent Supreme Court judgment on the Sardar Sarovar Dam has generated a series of articles in the media. Even though both technical and environmental issues have been argued threadbare in the Supreme Court, with affidavits and counter affidavits by the respective contending parties, these are again being questioned in these articles.

Some have also quoted the views of the World Commission on Dams (WCD) to argue that large dams would bring nothing but disaster. WCD had selected L.C. Jain and Medha Patkar to represent India in their deliberations.

Also, the WCD in its enthusiasm has found out that water reservoirs in the developing countries are depleting the ozone layer whereas similar projects in the developed countries are harmless. It has also been brought out that development through large dams is benefiting only a few politicians and rich people, not the large number of disadvantaged. Probably, the media forgets the food imports of the Sixties and refuses to recognise that the present food security has been brought about mainly through the availability of irrigation provided by these projects.
