PUNE, Sept 26: The local unit of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) and National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM) have condemned the brutal attack on the peaceful tribal men and women by the Maharashtra police at Dhadgaon (Dist. Nandurbar) on Thursday.
The police attack on the people from the Narmada valley on the indefinite sit-in was totally unprovoked and unwarranted, an NBA spokesman said on Sunday. The agitators were demanding that the State Government deal with the people's peaceful satyagraha in the Narmada valley with a dialogue through a suitable high-level official and not use the police as a shield.
Satyagrahis including NBA leader Medha Patkar and others were subjected to police brutality, the NBA spokesperson alleged and added, ``It seems that the Government of Maharashtra wanted to teach the people in the Narmada valley a lesson for their peaceful and tedious struggle for their rights and for justice.''
Over 400 activists were arrested at Dhadgaon on Thursday last. The NBA Kolhapur unit has condemned the State government for arresting the NBA activists protesting against the submergence of the villages due to the rising waters of Narmada.
The group demanded that immediate steps be taken for rehabilitation of those affected by the Sardar Sarovar Project.
