Narmada farmers take pledge

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 29: Tribals and peasants of the Narmada Valley on Tuesday pledged to safeguard the rights and resources of the people against destructive development.

They took the pledge on the fourth day of the indefinite dharna at Dhule in Maharashtra. The tribals and peasants from all over the country are demanding the release of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar and others who were arrested from satyagrah sites in Maharashtra a few days ago.

Sanjay Sangvai of the Narmada Bachao Andolan said that the tribals protested against the repressive policies of the Maharashtra Government. According to him, all the 375 people who were arrested observed a day's fast in Dhule jail on Tuesday.

Those took part in the dharna included Marathi literateur Ratnakar Matkari, Maharashtra MLA J U Thakre, national co-ordinator of National Alliance of People's Movement Jashbhai Patel and representatives of voluntary organisations from all over the country.
