KHANDWA: UPDATE AND APPEAL
62, Mahatma Gandhi Road,
Madhya Pradesh - 451551
This is a short update and appeal after 39-day struggle and dharna of thousands of people affected by Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar projects in Khandwa and Bhopal and the 37 day fast of two of the activists Chittaroopa and Bhagwan Mukati. You may recall that the State Government and the NHDC agreed to only three of the 17 demands put forward by the people and the people returned to the valley expressing their opposition to the government and their resolve that they would return on the 30th of September 2007 to Bhopal for a massive opposition rally with tens of thousands of oustees, if their demands were not met by then.
Subsequent to this, hectic activities of government officials in the submergence area have begun, and two Cabinet Ministers with all the concerned senior officials are camping in Khandwa to take the stock of the situation. It is clear that the pressure of peoples' unity is beginning to work, but it is only the very beginning. However for the oustees of Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar where the dams are already built and the people are being dispersed as paupers, the struggle offers a new hope.
The next phase of struggle begins with the final hearing on the Omakreshwar dam in the Madhya Pradesh High Court where our major prayer is for agricultural land to be given to the oustees, adult sons and daughters and also the landless oustees. We are also gearing up for individual hearings of thousands of oustees – especially the poor who have been arbitrarily left out of the Family Lists and the acquisition process even if their lands/properties are in the submergence area because the NHDC wants to earn super-profits and the poor cannot give graft to the officials.
We would be very grateful if you could spare some time for the valley for some volunteer work for as many days as is possible for you.
We would like you to thank all of you for your overwhelming support during the course of the struggle and hope that you will keep supporting us in the same spirit of solidarity.
After the programme, the bills (of water proof tent, light, mike etc) are now before us. Though during this whole period people from the valley have contributed through grains and small cash contributions and many, many other supporters flung all over India have contributed whole heartedly but we still have to pay many big bills. We would be very grateful if you could support us with some contributions to help us pay off these bills so that we can enter the next phase of the struggle.
Please send your contribution (Cheques or Drafts) in the name of 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' at the following address:
