On the second day of their indefinite dharna and fast, thousands of displaced people from the Omkareshwar, Indira Sagar and Maan dam affected regions braved incessant rains and thunder in Bhopal today. This is also the 26th day of the indefinite fast of senior Narmada Bachao Andolan activists Chittaroopa Palit and Bhagwan Mukati. The Andolan has presented its detailed 16-point list of demands to the CM. On the other hand, many eminent citizens of the country have written to the CM requesting him to grant the just demands of the Narmada Bachao Andolan and the displaced people of these dams.

Yesterday the displaced people of Omkareshwar and Indira Sagar dams collected in Bhopal and took out a mammoth rally to start the indefinite dharna here. These displaced people are continuing with their sit-in with phenomenal grit despite the incessant rains. Today is also the 26th day of the sit-in that had started in Khandwa on June 4th 2007.

The Andolan today presented its detailed 16-point list of demands to the CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan that outlines the outstanding issues of rehabilitation and land acquisition and also presents the current situation and the steps required to be taken to resolve the issues.

On the other hand many eminent citizens of the country have written a letter to the CM, the Governor, MP and all related parties to consider and grant the just demands of the displaced people. These include littérateur Ashok Vajpeyi, former Water Resources Secretary Ramaswamy Iyer, senior editor of Indian Express Ms Pamela Philipose, Magsaysay Award winner activist Arvind Kejriwal, senior journalist Praful Bidwai, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, JNU professor Kamal Mitra Chinoy, filmmaker Sanjay Kak, Professor Dinesh Mohan from Delhi University and psephologist Yogendra Yadav.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan is determined that it will conclude the indefinite fast and dharna only when the legitimate demands of the oustees of these dams are fully complied with.

Yuva Samwad: an informal group of youth

The Bhopal unit of Yuva Samwad joined the struggle of the displaced people from the Harda, Dewas and Khandwa districts of MP and affected by the Omkareshwar and Indira Sagar dams. These people are sitting on dharna in Bhopal since yesterday to press for their just demands of proper rehabilitation and implementation of the High Court orders. Many representatives of the Yuva Samwad participated in the dharna today and two of them – Rolly Shivhare and Pradeep Singh started a three-day fast in support of the afitationer's demands. We appeal to the authorities and specifically to the CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan to consider the just demands of the agitating displaced people and grant them their just rights.
