Five thousand people carry on sit-in: Represntatives meet District Collector

Five thousand project affected people from Onkareshwar and Indira Sagar dams carried on the sit-in (dharna) and indefinite hunger strike being carried out entered fourth day. Yesterday evening a delegation of project affected people met the district collector and discussed their demands in detail. In addition to people sitting on indefinite hunger strike, 89 women and men from 30 affected villages carried on the second day of their 3-day hunger strike.
Collector, Nikunj Shrivastva informed the delegation that policy issues like 'land for land' and 'land for adult sons and landless' etc can only be decided upon by the State. At the same time Collector promised that other issues related to the rehabilitation policy eg problems related to rehabilitation sites, facilities even at private rehabilitation sites, land aquisition of areas surrounded by water, aquisition of land and buildings which have been left out, pending grants, aquisition of under-developed rural units, location and facilities at the new rehabilitation sites etc. will be looked into and acted upon immediately.
It is to be noted that after a historic congregation and a rally on 4th June, more than five thousand men and women have been camping in Khandwa. Hundreds of applications/complaints on above issues are being prepared daily on the dharna site and submitted to the NHDC office. This large sit-in is being supported by residents of Khandwa and the villages around. Large number of people from these areas are visiting the Dharna site daily and also contributing resources in the form of grain and money.
Indefinite hunger strike commenced on 6th June by Chittaroopa Palit, Bhagwan Mukati, Krishnabai, Surajbai and Ashok Chaturvedi entered fourth day today. A medical team did a check up of all those on hunger strike and certified that they are keeping well. These thousands of project affected people camping in the stadium opposite collectorate have declared that they will not get up without getting their rights.Alok Agarwal
