Statement of Advani on "Foreign Powers" Irresponsible
NBA Denies Any Role in Chaos At Dam Site Inauguration

The Home Minister Shri Advani, while addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the construction as the Sardar Sarovar Dam site yesterday., has reportedly expressed his apprehensions, without naming NBA, that foreign powers could be behind the anti-dam forces. This statement, coming from the Home Minister of the country is highly irresponsible. As far the NBA is concerned, it is a mass organisation of the people of this country and it draws its initiative from this country itself. It is expected of  Shri Advani that as  Home Minister,  he would rise above party politics and avoid making such baseless statements.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan denies that it has anything to do with the chaos and the burning of cars of ministers at the inauguration of the construction work at the Sardar Sarovar Dam site yesterday. Reports in certain sections of the media hint or imply that the violent acts of the irate mobs were in some way the work of the NBA. The NBA had in fact deliberately decided against any program or demonstration at the dam site on this day and the NBA activists and members were not present at function. The real situation is that the Gujarat Government had brought in large number of people to the dam site in state transport buses provided free of charge in a blatant misuse of state machinery. There was a total breakdown of the arrangements at the site and this led to the mobs turning restless as they were without food and had difficulty in reaching the site. To blame this on the NBA is quite far fetched indeed.
