Senior activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan, including Medha Patkar will go on indefinite fast, if the Government fails to address the critical issues raised by the Andolan. Relay fasts will begin from tomorrow (Sept.14) onwards, if the Government continues with its apathy towards the adivasis, who are Sardar Sarovar Project affected, and fails to give a definite answer by today (Sept.13th) evening. If even this is paid no heed to, senior activists will be forced to go on indefinite fast from Sept. 17th. Over two thousand people, mostly from the tribal hamlets of Maharashtra, who are joined by representatives from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, along with supporters from different parts of the country are in Bombay since Sept. 11th. They are demanding the acceptance of Jst.(Retd) Daud Committee (appointed by the Government of Maharashtra) recommendations in toto by the Government and making a time schedule for its implementation, settling the issue of giving land rights to the tribals and since it is proved in more than one way, that the rehabilitation of the people affected by the already constructed dam is not done and there is no land available to offer to them, Maharashtra should take a moral stand that till the issues are settled, there cannot be any more construction. Yet another Committee, also appointed by the Government, to look into the costs-benefits of the Project for Maharashtra is yet to complete its studies and submit its findings. A rally was taken out in the morning from Tilak Bhawan to Azad Maidan (about 12 kms), through the heart of Bombay, conveying the message of the Narmada Valley to the citizens of Bombay. The rally, with full of songs and slogans, was impressive and disciplined. If the Government is really progressive and pro people, as it claims, they should address the issues raised by the adivasis. Mere lip service won't make it progressive. Prtibha ShindeNorjie Padvi Manglya Pavra Geethanjali Camp: Mumbai Contact Tel. Pervin: 2184779 Shashi Mehta: 2029296 |
