POSSIBILITIES OF ENERGY AND ELECTRICITY CONSERVATION
Conservation of Energy in Irrigation
Present consumption of electricity in irrigation : 18,78,600 units.
1.
If
metering is done . . . . . .. . . 20% saving
After conservation
utilisation of electricity will be. . . . . 15,28,800 units.
2. If the efficiency of the pumps and pipes is
improved upon ... 20% saving
Electricity Consumption will become . . . . . . . . . 12,02,300 units.
3. If there
is better use of water through better farming practices.. 15% saving
(Better crop rotation and
growth of manure crops to consolidate the soil)
Electricity Consumption will
become . . . . . . . . 10,22,000
units.
Production of Electricity from Kathi (Tuar-Cotton Crop residue)
·
Present
conservation of Kathi 753 tons
·
Electricity
generation from this 753/1.2 = 6,27,500 units
·
If
the entire village uses cowdung for cooking, 12262 tons of kathi would be
available, electricity generation will be
12262/1.2=10,21,800 units.
·
52,261
litres of kerosene will be conserved.
Conservation in Energy Consumption in Households
Conservation of 15% would be achieved with the use
of Tubes and CFL.

* Possible saving of 856600 units from farm pumps.
Possible saving of 19053 units through household conservation.
·
Possible
electricity generation from Kathi 1021800 units.
INFERENCES AND
INSIGHTS
·
Only
29% of the available cowdung is used. The entire village can cook with the
balance 71%.
? What would the distribution or sale process of excess gobar gas
to non gobar gas
owners be -
Flat Rate ?
- Hours Used?
·
All
the kathi can be used to generate 1021800 units electricity.
? Labourers are given kathi free of cost today, how would use of
Kathi for electricity production affect them?
·
400
tons of waste can also be brought into use for electricity generation.
- Cowdung and waste can be converted into natural fertilizer.
this is also an important non-electricity usage.
·
Electricity
will be conserved through metering of irrigation pump system by 20%, through
pump improvement by 20% and through reduced irrigation with better farming
practices by 15%.
Thus
856600 units of electricity conservation would be possible.
It is clear that Sulgaon can
be self-sufficient with reference to electricity.
*Possible
Self- Sufficiency : Some Suggestions
v
Apart
from electricity, several important sources of energy like kathi, gobar, wood
are available in large quantities in Sulgaon. It is clear that electricity is
not the only source of energy.
v
Conservation
of energy and alternate generation in Sulgaon would save 40 lakh units now
coming in from the state grid.
There
are three other sources of energy generation in Sulgaon.
1.
The
river at Sulgaon falls from a height of 45 feet before joining the Narmada which
has water till December. This can be used to generate electricity for six
months. Stop dams on the upstream would improve the command area and the river
could be kept alive the year round.
2.
There
is an approximate of 200 acres of government grazing land in Sulgaon. This can
be used to make 2000 tons of biogas and to generate ½ MW electricity.
